Trusting with your life

For a short while now, I’ve been taking driving lessons. Those who know me may understand that this was a scary step for me to take. I have long wondered and worried about whether I should start, because the idea of driving a car was scary to me.

However, I am blessed with a very good instructor. Yesterday I read the contract for the lessons, which hadn’t signed yet (a formality). I read through all the small letters. Some of the provisions made in the contract were there for when a driving instructor did not perform as expected. However, I had no issues signing the contract, knowing that the small letters won’t be necessary, as I am sure he will do his work  well. I realised: I trust this man with my life.

I had already had a few lessons with him, and knew that it was going to be more than okay. During the lessons he also invited me to trust him: When I said I was scared, he said he had never yet let a student bump into another car.

When you have driving instructions, you’d better trust someone, because you’re going to get a lot of instructions, and frankly there is no way I could drive on my own without causing an accident of some kind. But I know he is there to guide me, and his quiet but vocal presence helps reassure me as I am driving, and I always find myself peaceful and joyful afterwards.

Trusting creates peace.

Weirdly, I think I find it harder to trust God with my life. Who can relate? But when we trust Him and His instructions, we can be at a deep peace and rest.

Knowing God from experience allows us to sign a contract with God where we give Him our lives, no strings attached. In such a contract, we say we are willing to do His will no matter what. When we experience more and more who He is and how much He loves us, the more we are willing to let go and let Him take the wheel of our lives – while we do the steering.

And this too leads us to peace, a peace out of this world.
