When I saw this book – for free at a Christian conference I went to – I knew I needed to take it. After all, one of the things I struggle with in my life is trying to measure up to God’s grace, which is in one word, impossible.
The title of the book is Extreme righteousness: Seeing ourselves in the Pharisees by Tim Hovestol. This is not an easy read, and it has a lot of content. I think I might have to read it twice to get everything it says. However, the main point it makes are:
A. The Pharisees are not as “bad” as we think. They are overly caricatured; they have some pretty orthodox doctrine, which many evangelicals could relate too.
B. A lot of evangelicals are similar to the Pharisees; we are in danger of falling, and we do fall, into similar traps.
